Medical Advocate Goes Beyond the Grain

Full Story on Caribbean Today

This Ivy League graduate came from humble beginnings. Holding a first degree from Princeton University then attending Boston University School of Medicine, South Miami-based Pediatrician Dr. Tina Carroll-Scott, credits her altruistic values and indeed her success to her traditional Caribbean upbringing instilling discipline, focus, and generosity. She was born in upstate New York to a Jamaican mother and American father, noting that she was much more influenced by her mother’s side of the family. She spoke passionately about her recent trip to the island.

“One of the things that really affected me was the fact that I had gone to Jamaica for all the things that I love — the culture, the beauty of the island, the food, the people. But, the part that I could not ignore was the poverty and how so many people are suffering,” decried Dr. Carroll-Scott.

Fundraising

She noted that many schools in Jamaica were negatively affected by COVID-19 which left school children without even the basic necessities to continue learning. In fact, many rural households had no facilities or wherewithal for online support or classes.

A fundraising idea came to light when the Pediatrician returned to Florida and participated in a 5K race endorsed by the Consul General of Jamaica, Oliver Mair. Why not create a 5K event specifically to raise funds for schools in Jamaica, was her thought.

She continued: “So, how can I help in some way? How can I help the school children start off this new school year, how can I help it be a successful year? I decided I wanted to raise money for the schools,” said Dr. Carroll-Scott, who is now a proud Jamaican citizen.

Dubbed 5K Gallop, the race will take place on August 27th, 2022 at the Miami Metro Zoo to raise money as well as celebrate Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of independence. Participants can register online at 5Kgallop.org, come out to the event in person, or donate to a school of your choice on the website.

“I thought this would be a great way to get people out, to raise money, and also to commemorate Jamaica’s 60th”, said an energized Carroll-Scott.

The doctor’s benevolence extends way beyond fundraising. She began her medical career as a resident at the University of Chicago, where she met her husband who was also in residency at the same institution. Fate and choices would lead them to Florida where Car-roll-Scott did stints at Jackson Memorial and Miami Children’s Hospital.

Found Her Voice

But, it was her work with the Public Health Service in Fort Pierce Florida where she found her ‘voice’ serving migrant workers, mainly Haitians, and other underserved populations. It is because of that work that the pediatrician was offered the post as Medical Director for the South Miami Children’s Clinic where she is living her dream of giving back to others.

The Clinic was developed, with the support of South Miami Hospital and Baptist Health South Florida, to provide high quality medical care to uninsured/underinsured children living in South Miami, a community of primarily African-American working class with limited resources.

“Basically I was seeing patients that were uninsured, so it was a charity. I realized that they couldn’t navigate the system to figure out how to get on insurance like Medicaid, so I spent the first year or so helping them navigate that process and get-ting them on insurance.”

What the Medical Director did was transform the non-profit clinic into a hybrid model that allowed patients who got on insurance to continue with the practice. The clinic was originally setup to see only the uninsured. So, once they started receiving insurance they were no longer eligible to continue with the clinic.

“We were defeating the whole purpose of helping this community because if I get them on insurance, then they would no longer have a medical home. So they would end up either with no care or using the urgent care or emergency room as their primary care. I wanted to keep them under one roof. So my clinic is unique in that it’s a safety net.”

Now 15 years on, approximately 90 percent of Dr. Carroll-Scott’s young patients are insured. That means she does not have to rely solely on grants and donations, but can bill as well, with those dollars put back into the clinic for enhanced patient care.

“What makes the clinic work is that trust in me as the medical director, they trust my vision and they stand behind that 100 percent. They see the work that I’ve done in the community, not just from a medical standpoint, but also dealing with all of the social determinants of health,” Dr. Carroll-Scott explained.

She added: “I delve further to find out what’s going on in their environment, like housing insecurity, food insecurity, abuse in the household, whether it’s domestic violence or child abuse. Once you dig a little bit further, you realize that it’s the stressors of daily life that are causing the physical problems.”

And COVID-19 has proven to be one of the major stressors. The pediatrician noted that mental health issues has become a prime issue since the pandemic. The mother of three explained that anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, even eating disorders are showing up in her young patients to an extent she has never witnessed in her 25 years of practice.

This medical advocate continues to go beyond the call of her medical practice, going into the community she serves offering social and mental support. She has helped families se-cure housing, intervened in child abuse cases, or help children enter the school system.

“It’s about the relationships that I have with these families. And I think having them put their trust in me is really critical, especially during this pandemic… But, you know, I could not accomplish anything that I do in my daily life without God as my foundation.”

Tips for Throwing a Fun After-Dark Pool Party

0

Who doesn’t love a great pool party? Whether you’re making waves in the pool or chilling out on the patio, a pool party is the perfect place to unwind and have fun.

And the festivities don’t have to end when the sun goes down. In fact, nighttime gives pool parties a special ambience. Try something different with these tips for throwing a fun after-dark pool party.

Keep It Lit

Lighting your nighttime party adds safety and creates a festive mood. Having multiple types of light will dramatically transform your backyard.

  • The pool lights keep people safe around the water.
  • For a fresh twist on the popular white and yellow twinkle lights, illuminate your party with strings of color-changing LED lights. Hang the lights in tree branches, on tree trunks, or over sitting areas.
  • Citronella candles and citronella torches are an easy way to modernize your patio! Place the candles on tabletops and the torches around the perimeter of your party. The bright, full flames will deter bugs and look gorgeous.
Tips for Throwing a Fun After-Dark Pool Party

Play Games

Many of the games people enjoy playing at pool parties during the day can be played at night, too. For people in the pool, Marco Polo and swimming races are fun. And people outside the pool can enjoy games like cornhole in a well-lit yard.

Consider using lighted objects for a nighttime twist. For example, people can dive for lighted glow sticks or play volleyball with a light-up beachball. Classic pool party games can feel newer and more upbeat at night.

Serve Delicious Food and Drinks

Let your guests’ food preferences guide your menu decisions. In general, it’s best to have a mix of junk food and healthy food. Junk food can be a special treat at your party, while healthy options ensure you provide filling and nutritional meals.

Typical drinks to have on hand at a pool party include iced tea, juice, soda, and water. If you plan to have alcohol at your party, consider offering a special rum cocktail that brings some of the tastes of the Caribbean to your get-together.

Changes To Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

0
Photo by Diego PH on Unsplash

The best part about Caribbean life is that it’s still there for us to enjoy and appreciate. Unfortunately, in the not-so-distant future, that might not be the case. Many scientists worldwide are continuing to discuss the prolonged, damaging effects of global warming on our oceans, reefs, and coasts. Considering the robust forces at hand, we might feel powerless to stop these changes. However, we can take some action into our own hands. Here are some changes to make your home more eco-friendly.

Wash & Dry Differently

Most of the energy expenditure that goes toward heating your water is for your washing machine. To cut down on this energy-burning, consider washing your clothes at a tap cold, cold, or cool temperature. You might even find that your clothes look better, too—cold water keeps colors vibrant, and it won’t shrink your fabrics.

Given the warm coastal weather, you have the great option of letting your laundry dry on a clothesline outside. You can also save energy by drying your clothing on an air-only cycle.

Use Solar Power

With constant sunny skies, solar power is something you have the opportunity to capitalize on. There are a couple different ways you can incorporate solar power into your home. For starters, you can add solar-powered outdoor lights to brighten up your walkway when the night falls. Moreover, if you have or need a backup generator, consider switching to or purchasing a solar-powered backup, which is a more sustainable option. Finally, you can always take the plunge and install solar panels on your roof.

Switch Bulbs

Another way you can make your home eco-friendlier is by switching out your traditional light bulbs for LEDs. If you still use regular incandescent light bulbs, you may not know how much they waste and drain energy. LED light bulbs utilize significantly less energy than incandescent bulbs. Moreover, once you make the switch to LED, you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised to see your electric bill go down.

Reuse Plastic

It’s no secret that everyone in the world purchases single-use plastic items at some point in their lives. The best way to live a sustainable life is to give your plastic bottles new lives. For example, consider using them to water your plants both indoors and outdoors. Island life makes it quite easy for plants to dry out quickly, so a plastic bottle water feeder is a great way to keep your garden hydrated all day. You can also create an herb garden, a supply holder, or a drip irrigation system using plastic bottles.

How To Protect Your Home During Hurricane Season

0
How To Protect Your Home During Hurricane Season

Many areas of your home become vulnerable during hurricane season, and living on a coastal island raises the stakes slightly because a large body of water surrounds you. Learn how to protect areas of your home from hurricane damage. Preparing for damages before they occur minimizes the amount of disaster that could happen when a storm hits.

Trim Your Trees

During hurricanes, a significant liability is fallen tree branches because they can easily be carried in the storm’s winds and damage homes and cars. You must trim back the trees and shrubs in your yard for peak preparedness.

Cover Windows

Some of the most vulnerable areas of your home during a hurricane are the entry points and the windows. Along with the strong winds, debris can shatter your windows, causing even more havoc amidst a tropical storm. Hurricane shutters are worth the investment in order to protect your home and can save you money by preventing disaster.

Strap Down the Roof

Losing your roof during a hurricane is one of the worse things that can happen. To keep water out, stop leaks, and protect the shingles from damage, you can strap down your roof with straps and clips or use industrial shrink wrap to contain the roof. The wrap is heated to shrink around the roof, creating a seal. Use a heat gun extension for the hard-to-reach places to secure the plastic to the roof.

Secure Outdoor Items

Not just your home will need protection during hurricane season, but anything near or around your yard will also be susceptible to the high winds of the storm. Ensure that you protect your home from other flying objects by either bringing them inside or strapping them down. If items are heavier and larger, like picnic tables, use a rope to reinforce the furniture to the ground.

Aside from physical things you can do to protect your home, don’t forget to consider purchasing homeowners’ insurance that includes hurricane protection. Tropical storms create tons of damage to homes and cars, and as much as you can prepare, disaster is inevitable. Reinforce your home to minimize the amount of damage your house receives in the end.

Top Ways To Spruce Up Your Rental Kitchen

Top Ways To Spruce Up Your Rental Kitchen

It is always an exciting time when you arrive at your new rental, ready to unpack and spend the next year of your life in this space. However, trying to make your rental feel like home isn’t easy. That is especially true with the kitchen, as it tends to be the heart of most homes. Fortunately, there are many easy ways to spruce up your rental kitchen—and you can add a Caribbean splash to each option!

Kitchen Concepts

Before you start purchasing décor for your kitchen, it’s wise to choose a kitchen concept that you can start with. There are many to choose from—perhaps you want a luxurious, dynamic, or comfortable model. You might also have a few trendy kitchen design ideas already in mind. A beginning concept is helpful as it gives you a foundation to build with and guides you in creating the kitchen of your dreams.

Backsplash

There is always plenty of wall space that the default kitchen design leaves blank and bland, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Consider adding some color with stick-on tiles or a peel-and-stick backsplash. Peel-and-sticks are a fantastic option for renters as it is safe to apply to your walls and won’t cause any damage when taking them off. If you don’t want to add a backsplash to your entire kitchen but still want to incorporate color, you can just apply stick-on tiles to areas like your stove or sink area.

Rug

When people are trying to figure out the best way to spruce up their rental kitchen, they only focus on the midsection of the room. However, that leaves out prime space on your floor that can brighten up your kitchen. Consider adding a kitchen mat to the floor—this is a fantastic opportunity to search for a Caribbean-themed rug that brings gorgeous patterns and vibrant colors into the home.

Plants

Being a plant parent is all the rage lately for a good reason. Plants can reduce feelings of anxiety while being quite pleasant to look at. Adding some plants to your kitchen can literally liven up your space, and the best part is these green additions can be multi-functional. For example, you can add herbal plants to your kitchen that you can also utilize in your cooking.

I only hope you enjoy looking and reading it as much as I enjoyed shooting, editing and producing the final product,” he said.
