August 12, 2024 (ATLANTA, GA) – Grammy® Award-Nominated, chart-topping, global superstar Spice, is lighting up the Summer with the arrival of her highly anticipated third studio album, ‘Mirror 25’ which released on Friday, August 9, 2024 via Spice Official Entertainment with distribution through Empire. The chart-topping album made history within minutes after its release, debuting at #1 in Canada, #2 in the United States and United Kingdom on the All Genres Top Albums iTunes chart, and #1 at the Reggae Top Albums iTunes chart simultaneously, making Spice the first Jamaican female artist to land the highest chart entry on the all-genres chart!

‘Mirror 25,’ the 25-song project quickly dominated the charts, landing in second place behind Rapper, Kanye West’s ‘Vultures 2’ album which held the number one spot. The milestone album, Executive Produced by Spice, solidified its global dominance worldwide, charting as the #1 Apple Music Top Album in several countries such as Canada, Israel, Jamaica, Italy, UK, Cayman Islands, Antigua Bermuda, Trinidad, and Saudi Arabia among others. It is also the #1 album in Jamaica on Apple–both explicit and clean versions of the album are at #1 and #3 in the US on the iTunes Reggae Chart.

In addition, Spice’s Gospel song, ‘You are Worthy,’ the second track featured on the celebratory album, quickly soared up the charts, debuting at #1 for Gospel on the Apple Music Top Songs in Jamaica, also charting in 11 countries on Apple Music.

Even Nicki Minaj, “the Queen of Rap” co-signed Spice’s independent project, acknowledging the Platinum-Gold selling Grammy nominated artist’s ‘musical evolution.’ ‘Mirror 25’ is an iconic 25 track album showcasing Spice’s legendary sound infused with a unique kaleidoscope of rhythmic tracks intertwined with a melting pot of genres; further reinforcing the powerhouse performer’s signature influence in the genre of Reggae/Dancehall and beyond; cementing her presence as one Jamaica’s most versatile and creative artists of today’s time.

Across 25 tracks, ‘Mirror 25’ is a unique body of work serving as Spice’s raw, open diary of her past trials and tribulations– with each track revealing a vulnerable part of her life. The album title, ‘Mirror 25’ symbolizes reflection and self-discovery, marking a new era for Spice to artistically showcase her growing pains and lessons learned as an artist and as a woman.

“I’m so grateful for the unwavering support,” says Spice, the Queen of Dancehall in response to the worldwide success of the album. “I knew that the album was a masterpiece, but I’m excited to see the positive responses because I was very meticulous in creating ‘Mirror 25.’ I knew my fan base is very diverse, so I wanted to make sure that there was something on it for everyone. Learning that this is the first time a Female Jamaican artist has entered the USA All Genres Chart at #2 I’m grateful to open up another international door for women in Dancehall. I’m humbled and grateful for this milestone.”

The album takes listeners on an introspective journey portraying Spice’s highs and lows, victories, struggles, and growth that she has overcome musically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. ‘Mirror 25’ delivers infectious melodies with empowering messages while commemorating the Dancehall legend’s 25-year milestone as an international recording artist.

As a surprise for her beloved ‘Besties,’ Spice released her new single and visual, “Whoop,” the very same day her ‘Mirror 25’ album was released. Serving as the fifth single from the album, “Whoop” is a high energy track that serves as a mantra for positivity. The song blends an eccentric, Caribbean sound fused with an upbeat, hip-hop rhythm. Written and produced by Spice, the lyrics encourage listeners to prioritize their mental and emotional health all while fostering a positive mindset. Composed as a feel-good dance song for listeners, “Whoop” celebrates protecting your peace, and moving away from bad energy and negativity. The track is the perfect exploration of self-reflection, encouraging listeners to move away from toxicity.

On the song, Spice croons: “Jump over bad energy, miss me with your negativity. A so mi sight off dutty livity. Mi jump up inna prosperity.”

The stunning music video, directed by Royal Eyez (Royal Okwor), artistically showcases Spice’s vocals and message in the futuristic era that adds depth to the viewing experience. The lyrics delve into a next level video that showcases Spice’s creative mind, infusing her Jamaican culture of music and dance with a futuristic edge.

The music video dives into the outer space world as Spice cosplays an Alien from the future who unapologetically commands attention and world domination. This symbolically resonates with Spice’s massive crossover success as the reigning Queen of Dancehall, as she sings about navigating through negativity and adversity throughout the last 25 years. Produced by Spice official Entertainment, the rhythm track was recorded at Ireland Recording Studios and composed by Karon “Yow Levite” Young, and mastered by Redboom Super Mix.

Spice’s previous singles from her ‘Mirror 25’ album– “Gangster” featuring Chronic Law, and her empowerment anthem, “Ex Boyfriend,” were well received; along with her controversial single, ‘2085 Tea followed by her breakout hit, ‘Round Round,’ the infectious party anthem featuring 12-time Grammy® Award-Nominated Rapper, Busta Rhymes; with both reaching #1 on iTunes Reggae charts.

What You Can Do To Preserve Caribbean Reefs

0

Caribbean reefs are stunning underwater ecosystems that play a vital role in marine biodiversity and local economies. Unfortunately, these vibrant reefs face numerous threats from pollution, overfishing and climate change. Understanding what you can do to preserve Caribbean reefs is essential for protecting these natural wonders for future generations. We have some practical steps you can take to make a positive impact.

Practice Responsible Snorkeling and Diving

When exploring the beauty of Caribbean reefs, it’s crucial to be mindful of your actions to avoid causing harm. Avoid touching or standing on coral reefs, as they are delicate and easily damaged. Instead, maintain buoyancy and swim above the reef to get a close look without causing harm.

Also, consider using reef-safe sunscreen to minimize the introduction of harmful chemicals into the water. Traditional sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, which can bleach and damage coral reefs. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to protect both your skin and the environment.

Support Sustainable Fishing Practices

Overfishing is one of the leading threats to Caribbean reefs. By supporting sustainable fishing practices, you can help reduce the pressure on marine life and allow fish populations to recover. Choose seafood with certifications from organizations such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).

Additionally, consider participating in local initiatives that promote sustainable fishing. Volunteer with organizations working to restore fish populations and educate others about responsible fishing practices. Every small action contributes to the larger goal of preserving marine ecosystems.

Reduce Pollution and Waste

Pollution is a significant threat to the health of Caribbean reefs. Reducing your waste and properly disposing of trash can help protect these fragile ecosystems. Avoid single-use plastics, such as straws, bags, and bottles, which often end up in the ocean and harm marine life.

Participate in beach clean-up events to remove litter from coastal areas and prevent it from entering the water. If you like to hit the water and go boating, consider switching to an electric motor to lower emissions. You’ll still need to avoid certain electric motor mistakes while on the water, but the benefits of going electric are worthwhile. By making conscious choices, you can reduce your environmental footprint and contribute to healthier reefs.

Advocate for Reef Protection Policies

Advocacy plays a crucial role in preserving Caribbean reefs. While small individual choices help, real change needs to occur on corporate and governmental levels. Support policies and initiatives aimed at protecting these ecosystems by raising awareness and contacting your local representatives. Sign petitions, join conservation organizations, and participate in campaigns that promote reef protection.

Educate others about the importance of reefs and the threats they face. Share information on social media, host educational events, and encourage your community to get involved. Collective efforts can lead to significant changes in policy and behavior, ultimately benefiting the reefs.

Taking action to preserve Caribbean reefs is essential for ensuring the longevity and health of these incredible ecosystems. There are many things you can do to preserve Caribbean reefs, from practicing responsible snorkeling to advocating for protective policies. Each step you take contributes to a brighter future for our reefs.

By implementing these practices, you can make a meaningful difference in the fight to protect Caribbean reefs. Let’s work together to safeguard these underwater treasures and ensure they thrive for generations to come.

Urban Film Festival Returns to Miami for Its 9th Annual Celebration August 30-September 1, 2024 in Historic Overtown

Red Carpet and World Premiere of “The Reject” directed by Bla G & Yonel Aris at Lyric Theater On Saturday, September 1 at 8 pm

The Urban Film Festival (UFF) is thrilled to announce its return for the 9th annual event, taking place over Labor Day weekend from August 30 to September 1, 2024, in the historic Overtown district of Miami, FL. This highly anticipated festival remains the largest free film festival in the United States, dedicated to educating, exposing, and providing distribution opportunities for the next generation of urban filmmakers.

There is a growing buzz surrounding the world premiere of The Reject, which is based on a true story and follows the inspiring journey of Kionne McGhee, a Miami-Dade County Commissioner who rises from being overlooked by society as a young man. Through his mother’s unwavering faith, relentless hard work, and steadfast determination, McGhee overcomes adversity and achieves remarkable success—the film by Romeoland Studios and produced by Romeo Miller & Marco Molinet.

The Urban Film Festival is a premier 3-day event celebrated for its dedication to sharpening the skills of young filmmakers while allowing them to showcase their masterpieces. UFF is recognized as one of the largest international gatherings of experts in the urban film industry. At UFF, we celebrate culturally driven content and proudly provide a platform for up-and-coming urban filmmakers to share the stories of their communities.

The inspiration to create the Urban Film Festival came from a deep-seated desire to provide a platform for voices and stories often underrepresented in mainstream media. Cofounders Marco Molinet and Bla G wanted to create a space where culturally driven content and community stories could be celebrated and appreciated.

“The Urban Film Festival is more than just a celebration of film; it is a vital platform for underrepresented voices in the film industry,” said Marco Molinet, cofounder of Florida Film House. “By equipping emerging filmmakers with the necessary tools and skills, we are fostering a new generation of storytellers committed to telling their communities’ authentic narratives. The festival’s commitment to education, exposure, and distribution creates unparalleled opportunities for these filmmakers to break into the industry and make their mark.”

The Urban Film Festival has become a cornerstone for urban filmmakers, providing them with the resources and exposure they need to thrive in the industry and challenge the status quo.

Free screenings, workshops, and industry discussions are integral to the festival’s mission of education and empowerment. Free screenings make the festival accessible to a broader audience, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent people from experiencing quality films. Workshops provide:

  • Practical skills and knowledge.
  • Covering everything from scriptwriting to cinematography.
  • Helping emerging and established filmmakers hone their craft.

Industry discussions offer invaluable insights into the film industry’s current trends and challenges, fostering networking opportunities and encouraging collaboration. Together, these components create a holistic educational experience that equips filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

The Urban Film Festival offers numerous distribution opportunities for filmmakers. The organizers partner with distribution companies and platforms eager to acquire fresh, diverse content. Additionally, the festival acts as a networking hub, allowing filmmakers to connect with distributors, producers, and industry professionals who can help them navigate the distribution landscape.

A notable success story is Kamal Ani-Bello, a 1st Take Youth Film Program student. He was awarded by Romeo Miller at the Urban Film Festival in 2019 and is now starring in a Florida Film House movie called “The Reject,” premiering at the 2024 Urban Film Festival. More Caribbeans Make History at Paris Olympics and Other Islanders Through to Finals

As the 2024 Paris Olympics draw to a close, Caribbean athletes continue to make their mark, bringing home medals and breaking records.

In a thrilling women’s 200m final on Tuesday, American sprinter Gabby Thomas claimed the gold, while St. Lucia’s Julian Alfred secured a silver medal, adding another accolade to her island’s athletic achievements, and was beaming with pride for Thomas’ win. Although Thomas represents Team USA, she has Jamaican roots through her father. Nicknamed “The Genius,” Thomas is not only a sprinting sensation but also an academic powerhouse, holding a bachelor’s degree in neurobiology from Harvard University and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas. With ambitions to one day open a hospital, her talents and aspirations extend far beyond the track — but for now she’s enjoying being front and center on the podium.

Cuban wrestler Mijain Lopez has left it all on the mat, winning his fifth consecutive gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling on Tuesday, defeating Yasmani Acosta Fernandez of Chile 6-0 in the final. This victory makes him both the first Olympic athlete to win gold in the same event at five consecutive Games and the first wrestler to win five gold medals. Following his win, Lopez retired, symbolically placing his shoes in the center of the mat among a crowd of screaming fans. He is inspired to mentor and educate the younger generation going forward.

In men’s discus throw, Jamaica celebrated a historic win on Wednesday as Rojé Stona took home the gold and set a new Olympic record of 70.00 meters, marking Jamaica’s first Olympic gold in the event and their first gold at Paris 2024 overall.

Although Kirani James, the pride of the ‘Spice Island,’ was favored to win the men’s 400m final, it was the USA’s Quincy Hall who clinched the gold with a nail-biting comeback in the last moments of the race. Jereem Richards from Trinidad and Tobago narrowly missed bronze by just 0.4 seconds, while James fell behind and finished 5th.

In women’s sprinting, Shada Williams of Barbados is heading to the finals of the women’s 400m. Though she wasn’t in the top two finishers in her heat, her impressive time guaranteed her spot in the final set for Friday, August 9 at 2pm. She will compete alongside fellow islander Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic sprinter Alexander Ogando has also made it to the finals to race against the favored Noah Lyles in the men’s 200m final on Thursday at 2:30pm.

St. Lucia Wins Gold, Jamaica Faces Upset And More After Exciting Paris Olympics Weekend

Julien Alfred of St. Lucia Wins Gold, Jamaica Faces Upset And More After Exciting Paris Olympics Weekend

There’s a new gold medalist in the Olympic women’s 100-meter, and she’s an islander! Julien Alfred won St. Lucia its first-ever Olympic gold medal in that event, outsprinting the favored Team USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson with a time of 10.72 seconds. The event was marked by surprises, including Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s unexpected and controversial withdrawal, and Shericka Jackson’s early decision to focus on the 200m. St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre congratulated Alfred, highlighting the significance of her achievement for the country and its future in athletics, and stated that there will be a holiday in her honor.

But Alfred isn’t stopping there. She competed in the women’s 200m heats, securing first place in the semifinal round with a time of 21.98 seconds. With Shericka Jackson now out of the 200m competition, Alfred aims for another gold as she prepares to race against the United States’ Gabby Thomas on Tuesday, August 6 at 3:40 pm EST.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s fans experienced a turbulent weekend, with two-time Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce withdrawing moments before the women’s 100m semi-finals due to an unspecified injury. Her absence came shortly after a “rule change” dispute with officials over entry to a warm-up track, which sparked speculation. With an injury sidelining Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah suffering an injury during her Olympic trials, none of the Jamaican sprinters that stacked the podium at the Tokyo Games in 2021 were able to take home another win for the Rock.

In men’s athletics, a photo finish saw the USA’s Noah Lyles narrowly beat Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson for gold in Sunday’s event, with Lyles winning by five thousandths of a second thanks to a well-timed lean at the finish line. Many were shocked as the photo appears to show Thompson’s feet ahead at the finish line, however according to Olympic rules, whoever’s torso passes the line first is the winner. Lyles finished with a time of 9.784 seconds, and Thompson with 9.789 seconds, marking the closest race in Olympic history.

Elsewhere around the islands, Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic looks promising for a podium spot in the men’s 200m, advancing to the semifinals with a time of 20.04 seconds. The semi finals are set for Wednesday, August 7, with finals on Thursday, August 8. Grenada also celebrated its first bronze medal this Olympics, won by decathlete Lindon Victor with a score of 8,711 points across 10 track and field events.

Jamaican Dancehall Star Vybz Kartel Released Early from Prison After 13-Years Served

Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, has been freed from prison after the Jamaican Court of Appeal decided against a retrial for his murder charge. Kartel, who was jailed in 2014 for the alleged killing of Clive “Lizard” Williams alongside his co-accused Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John, has consistently maintained his innocence despite an initial life sentence then 35-year minimum.

His conviction was overturned in March by the UK’s Privy Council, which ruled that the presence of a potentially biased juror rendered the trial unfair, though he remained in jail awaiting the retrial decision. On Wednesday, July 31, the Jamaican court cited the “passage of time, lack of access to witnesses and evidence and the huge expense of a retrial,” along with Kartel’s declining health due to Graves’ disease, as reasons for their decision.

Kartel’s release marks a significant moment for the dancehall music scene and the Jamaican judicial system. Known for hits like “Fever,” “Romping Shop” and “Frontin’” with Pharrell Williams and JAY-Z, Kartel’s influence has somehow only grown during his imprisonment with many believing he was falsely accused.

While fans and other music industry giants like Drake, Busta Rhymes and Dancehall queen Spice celebrate his release on Instagram and X, others are shocked and disappointed that he is free or suspicious that the person released is not actually Kartel due to his changed appearance. There also remains a somber reminder of the unresolved disappearance of Clive Williams, whose death details still remain much unknown.

Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce and Fellow Jamaicans Move on to 2024 Paris Olympics 100M Semifinals

Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce kicked off her final Olympic journey with the second fastest time of all the heats, securing her spot in the women’s 100m semi-finals in Paris.

The 37-year-old, five time Olympic veteran completed her first round this morning with an easy 10.91-second run, finishing just behind Ivorian sprinter Marie-Josée Ta Lou’ 10.87 seconds. Team Jamaica running mates Tia Clayton and Shashalee Forbes have also advanced. Clayton, competing in heat four, finished second with a time of 11.00 seconds, while Forbes, running in heat six, finished second with a time of 11.19 seconds. All runners placing in the top three of their heat are expected to advance to the finals.

All eyes are on Fraser-Pryce for the finals, with anticipation building for her matchup against the USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson. Richardson effortlessly took first place in her Olympic debut with a time of 10.94 seconds. Although Fraser-Pryce’s time was faster, announcers at Richardson’s heat noted that the young sprinter appeared to be significantly holding back. The upcoming race promises an exciting clash between the seasoned legend and the rising star.

The women’s 100m semi-finals are scheduled for tomorrow, August 3, at 1:50pm EST, with the finals taking place later the same day at 3:20pm EST.

The men’s 100m that will feature a showdown between two Jamaican sprinters, Kishane Thompson and Oblique Seville, and American Noah Lyles is set for Saturday, August 3 (100m round 1) Sunday, August 4 (semifinals and final). The men’s 200m is Monday, August 5 (round 1), Wednesday, August 7 (semifinals) and Thursday, August 8 (final).

Yes, Black People DO Need to Wear Sunscreen

0
the importance of sunscreen for black people

“I don’t need sunscreen, I’m black. I won’t burn!” Many of us have heard this from friends and family with darker skin. Despite common misconceptions, darker skin is not immune to the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Wearing sunscreen is crucial for preventing skin damage, premature aging and skin cancer, ensuring overall skin health for everyone regardless of skin tone.

Dr. Latanya T. Benjamin, MD is a double board-certified and fellowship-trained Pediatric Dermatologist, former Stanford University Professor and founder of Young Skin®, a medical practice that provides specialized care for children with diverse skin types. Here’s what we learned regarding common misconceptions about sunscreen practices for darker skin and how you can stay safe this summer.

Dr. Benjamin, please share a bit about your background.

I am proud of my [Jamaican] roots, which have greatly influenced my approach to medicine and patient care. Growing up, I was inspired by the diversity and resilience of my community. My passion for pediatric dermatology stemmed from a desire to address skin conditions in children of all backgrounds, ensuring they receive the specialized care they need.

There’s a common idea that people with darker skin don’t need sunscreen. How accurate is this?

The idea that darker skin doesn’t need sunscreen is a myth. Black people are at risk for conditions like hyperpigmentation and melanoma when they neglect sunscreen. While melanin provides some natural protection, it does not prevent all UV damage. Darker skin can still suffer from the harmful effects of UV rays, including DNA damage, premature aging and skin cancer. Despite lower incidence rates, skin cancer in Black individuals is often diagnosed at a later, more dangerous stage.

What SPF level do you recommend for “melanated” people, and does this differ by shade of skin?

I recommend an SPF of at least 30. This level provides adequate protection while considering the natural melanin present in darker skin. Concerns about white residue from sunscreen can deter use, but educating patients about modern, non-whitening formulations can help overcome these barriers.

Does the type of sunscreen (chemical vs. mineral) affect its efficacy?

Both types can be effective, but mineral sunscreens with ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often better suited for sensitive skin and provide broad-spectrum protection without the risk of irritation. For darker skin, look for sunscreens that contain these ingredients and avoid products with oxybenzone, which can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Opt for non-comedogenic and fragrance-free options to prevent breakouts and skin sensitivity.

Do we need to use sunscreen if staying inside?

Daily sunscreen use is crucial, even for those who are mostly indoors. UV rays can penetrate windows, and incidental exposure adds up. Incorporating sunscreen into daily routines can be simple — choose moisturizers or makeup products with SPF.

How can parents ensure that their children understand the importance of sun protection from an early age?

Parents can teach children about sun protection by leading by example and using kid-friendly sunscreens. Making sunscreen application a fun and routine part of their day helps instill good habits.

What exactly is Young Skin®?

Young Skin® is a private medical practice dedicated to providing specialized dermatological care for children. Our mission is to offer compassionate, comprehensive care for all skin types and colors, addressing both common and rare skin concerns with a focus on healing and inclusivity. My time as a professor at Stanford University has profoundly shaped my clinical practice. It has instilled in me a commitment to evidence-based medicine, continuous learning, and mentoring the next generation of physicians, all of which are integral to the care we provide at Young Skin®.

8 Major Issues That Determine Whether You Are a Democrat, Republican or Independent

With the November 2024 Presidential Election coming up, it’s important to figure out your views to make an informed decision on which party will be getting your vote. The Democratic, Republican and Independent parties represent distinct perspectives, each with its own beliefs, principles and vision for the country’s future. While individual candidates may have their own opinions, understanding the key differences between these major political parties is crucial for grasping the broader debates that drive American politics.

From economic policy to social issues, healthcare to immigration, climate change to foreign policy and beyond, the “Big Three” offer contrasting approaches that influence their supporters and legislative agendas. This side-by-side comparison explores the major beliefs and principles that define what it means to be a Democrat versus a Republican versus an Independent, so you can better decide which party you identify with.

ImmigrationPath to Citizenship: Support comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
Humanitarian Approach: Democrats tend to emphasize the humane treatment of immigrants and refugees who cross the border.
Strong Borders: Republicans prioritize border security and border fencing along the US-Mexico border as well as strict enforcement of immigration laws.
Merit-Based Immigration: Advocate for a merit-based immigration system that prioritizes skills and economic contributions to the United States over family reunification.
Case-by-Case: Similar to the other issues, Independents support a balanced approach to immigration that addresses security concerns while recognizing the contributions of immigrants and the root of their desire to come into the county. Many seek practical reforms that can gain broad support.
Climate Change and EnvironmentClimate Change Action: Recognizing the effects of global warming, Democrats advocate for aggressive action to combat climate change, including regulations on carbon emissions and investments in renewable energy.
Environmental Protection: They also support strong environmental regulations to protect natural resources, combat the climate crisis and safeguard public health. Focuses include clean air, clean and available water and green technology.
Economic Concerns: Climate change remains a low-priority issue for the Republican party. They often prioritize economic growth over environmental regulations, fearing that such regulations could harm vital businesses.
Skepticism on Climate Change: Some factions are skeptical of the extent of human impact on climate change, or global warming at all, and oppose extensive regulations or investment. Majority believes that fossil fuels like oil and coal should be used over expanding renewable sources.
Sustainability Focus: Independents recognize the importance of addressing climate change but prefer solutions that balance environmental protection with economic growth.
EducationPublic Education: Democrats strongly support funding for free public education and oppose school vouchers that divert funds from public schools. They also support teaching a wide variety of subjects beyond the standard math, science and history, like family planning, art, race and sexuality discourse and more. They also hope to increase teacher salaries.
Higher Education: Democrats are also strong advocates for making college more affordable, often supporting tax benefits, financial aid, tuition-free, debt-free or tuition payback college initiatives.
School Choice: While Republicans don’t oppose the public school system, they do support school vouchers and charter schools as alternatives to traditional public schools. They hope to restructure the school system to teach them skills that would make them more equipped for a career. Republicans prefer to stick to the standard subjects, and advocate for abstinence education in sex education programs.
Local Control: Favor local control over education policy rather than federal oversight. Republicans tend to favor private loans over federally funded initiatives.
Quality Education: Independents support policies that improve education quality, whether through public or private means. Many advocate for a practical mix of public funding and school choice to ensure all children receive a good education.

Human Rights: Democrats strongly emphasize promoting human rights and democracy globally, even in situations occurring outside the United States and its allies.

America First: While willing to help allies, they often prioritize American sovereignty and are skeptical of international agreements that they believe would limit U.S. autonomy.
Pragmatic Approach: Independents tend to favor a balanced foreign policy that combines strong defense with diplomacy. Many support international cooperation but are wary of overextending U.S. commitments abroad.
Gun ControlStricter Gun Laws: Democrats support more stringent gun control measures, including thorough background checks, health checks if necessary, assault weapons bans and restrictions on gun ownership for certain individuals. Most Democrats respect the rights of responsible gun owners but believe that guns pose significant dangers.Second Amendment Rights: Republicans have always strongly defended the Second Amendment and oppose most gun control measures, advocating for the right to bear arms as a fundamental liberty and personal safety. Most of the party supports concealed carry permits and actually believes essential workers like teachers should be allowed to carry.Balanced Regulations: Independents often support moderate gun control measures that protect public safety without infringing on individual rights. Many advocate for “common-sense” regulations like increased background checks while upholding the right for individuals to own firearms.

What To Know Before Hitting the Polls: Your Guide to the 2024 Presidential Election

The 2024 presidential election is shaping up to be a pivotal moment in American history, with critical issues at stake and a highly engaged electorate for both red and blue. Understanding the key dates, voter registration processes and the implications of party affiliation are essential for participating effectively in this democratic process. And let’s face it — voting can be confusing, so we’ve outlined some crucial information you need to make sure your vote counts.

Voter Registration

General Resources for Voter Registration:

  • Online Registration: Many states offer online voter registration, which is often the easiest way to sign up. Visit your state’s election office website or a national resource like Vote.org to get started.
  • In-Person Registration: If you are not already registered to vote, you can register in person at your local election office which can be found at usa.gov, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or other designated locations.
  • Mail Registration: Obtain a voter registration form from your state’s election office website, fill it out and mail it back.

Key Registration Deadlines:

Deadlines to register to vote vary by state, so make sure you check your local laws. Florida residents must be registered at least 29 days before the election. The deadline has passed to register or change your party affiliation for the 2024 Primary Election, but the deadline to register for the 2024 General Election is October 7, 2024.

Primary Elections and General Voting

Primaries are held at different times depending on the state. The primary season typically runs anytime from March to August, but the exact dates for your area can be found on your state’s election office website. The general election is always held on the first Tuesday in November.

Party Affiliation and Primary Voting

Open vs. Closed Primaries:

  • Open Primaries: Voters of any party affiliation can vote in either party’s primary. Some states allow Independents and even members of the opposite party to vote in their primaries.
  • Closed Primaries: Only registered party members can vote in their respective party’s primary. If you are a Democrat, you can only vote in the Democratic primary, and similarly for Republicans.
  • Semi-Closed Primaries: Unaffiliated voters can choose which primary to vote in, but registered party members can only vote in their own party’s primary.

Florida is a closed primary state, so:

  • Democrat: If you register as a Democrat, you can only vote in the Democratic primary.
  • Republican: If you register as a Republican, you can only vote in the Republican primary.
  • Independent: Registering as an Independent means you are not affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican parties. In some states, Independents can vote in either party’s primary, but in others, they may be excluded from participating in primary elections.

For the general election, all registered voters receive the same ballot and are eligible to vote for any candidate within or outside of their party affiliation.

Important Considerations

  • Voter ID Laws: Some states require a photo ID to vote. Check your state’s requirements and make sure you have the necessary identification before heading to the polls. Some acceptable forms of ID for Florida voters are: driver’s license, United States passport, debit or credit card, student identification card and military identification.
  • Early Voting and Absentee Voting: Many states offer early voting periods and absentee voting options. In Florida, a Vote-by-Mail (absentee voting) ballot is available from your local Supervisor of Elections 12 days before the election. Your completed ballot must be mailed or delivered in person to your local Supervisor of Elections’ office by 7:00pm on election day. If you cannot vote on election day, these alternatives ensure your vote is counted. You can find your Florida Supervisor of Elections here.
  • Polling Locations: Know your designated polling place, which can be found on your voter registration card, by checking with your local election office or using the Florida Division of Elections online resource

Do Your Research

Don’t leave your Presidential vote up to only what you’ve seen on social media or major news platforms. Take the time to do a deep dive into the candidate you’re thinking about voting for to make sure that the policies and initiatives they support align with your beliefs and thinking.

In addition to the President, you are also responsible for voting in other elected officials who can make a true difference. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives seats are up for election and approval for Amendments are also on your November ballot. Take some time to review these before heading to the polls. Check out Vote411.org to get information on who and what will be on your ballot.
