8 Caribbean Athletes to Watch at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

0

From Jamaica to Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada to Haiti and beyond, the Caribbean is renowned for producing world-class athletes who dominate the international sports scene. As the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics approach (from July 26th to August 11th), the region’s top talents are gearing up to shine on the global stage once again. Sprinters, swimmers, tennis players, and even weightlifters — these athletes embody the spirit of excellence and determination. Keep an eye on these incredible eight Caribbean athletes as they strive for glory and continue to elevate their islands’ proud sporting heritage.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce | Jamaica | Track and Field

A well-known legend in sprinting, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce continues to be a formidable force on the track. At 37, the “Pocket Rocket” shows no signs of slowing down in Paris, despite an announcement that this Olympics will be her last before retirement. With multiple Olympic gold medals to her name, Fraser-Pryce aims to further solidify her legacy in the 100m and 200m events. Her incredible speed and experience make her a strong contender for the podium in Paris, and with fellow “Big Three” sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah out with an achilles injury, there are even more eyes on Fraser-Pryce and teammade Shericka Jackson to bring home gold for Jamaica.

Kirani James | Grenada | Track and Field

Kirani James, the pride of Grenada as the first and only Olympic medalist of the island, is another athlete to watch closely. Known for his prowess in the 400m, “The Jaguar” has previously won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and silver in Rio in 2016. After a challenging period dealing with the confirmed onset of Graves’ disease, he surprised fans and returned to form with a bronze medal in Tokyo 2020. James’ resilience and competitive spirit will be key as he seeks to add a fourth medal to his collection in Paris with new coach Chris Lawrence. His former coach Harvey Glance passed away in June 2023.

Dylan Carter | Trinidad and Tobago | Swimming

Dylan Carter is a versatile swimmer from Trinidad and Tobago, competing in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly events. Carter has represented his country in multiple international competitions, like the 2021 World Short Course Championships where he became the first Trinbagonian swimmer to win a silver medal in the 50 meter butterfly. He made his first appearance in Rio in 2016 and also competed in Tokyo 2020 without taking home any medals, so he’s looking to make a significant impact as he heads to Paris after breaking the Olympic standard of 48.34 seconds in the men’s 100m freestyle by .10 seconds at the 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series in Ft Lauderdale, cinching his qualification for Paris.

Jean-Julien Rojer | Curaçao | Tennis

Jean-Julien Rojer, representing the Netherlands but originally from Curaçao, is a top-ranked doubles tennis player. With multiple Grand Slam titles to his name, Rojer’s expertise and experience in doubles make him a formidable competitor in the Olympic tennis tournament. Despite not placing higher than 9th since his first Olympic appearance in London in 2012, he will look to add an Olympic medal to his impressive career achievements in Paris.

Yohan Blake | Jamaica | Track and Field

Yohan Blake, the 2011 World Champion in the 100m, remains a key figure in Jamaican athletics. After Usain Bolt’s retirement in 2017 after the Rio Olympics, Blake stepped into the spotlight as a leader of the new generation of sprinters. Although he has faced challenges with hamstring injuries, Blake’s experience and determination make him a strong contender for a medal in the 100m in Paris, which he has publicly stated will be his final Olympics.

Andre De Grasse | Canada | Track and Field

While competing for team Canada, Andre De Grasse’s roots trace back to Trinidad and Tobago on his mother’s side, and he proudly represents the Caribbean diaspora. De Grasse is known as the “fastest man in Canada” and won gold in the men’s 200m, and bronze in the men’s 4x100m relay and the men’s 100m in Tokyo 2020. In Rio 2016, his first Olympic games, he stood out with silver in the 200m and two bronze medals again in the 100m and 4x100m relay. His remarkable speed and consistency make him a favorite in both the 100m and 200m sprints for his showing in Paris.

Steven Gardiner | The Bahamas | Track and Field

Steven Gardiner, the reigning Olympic gold champion in the 400m, is another star from The Bahamas. Known for his smooth and powerful running style, Gardiner has consistently been at the top of his game. In a devastating turn at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Gardiner suffered a tendon sprain and collapsed during his semi-final heat, abruptly ending his Budapest campaign. However he is back to full health, looking forward to defending his title in Paris 2024 and continuing The Bahamas’ tradition of success in track and field.

Julien Alfred | Saint Lucia | Track and Field

Julien Alfred is a rising star in Caribbean athletics, known for her speed in the sprints. Hailing from Saint Lucia, Alfred has made significant strides on the international stage, particularly in the 100m and 200m events. With her recent successes in the collegiate circuit and her gold medal in the 60m event at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, Alfred is poised to make a big impact in Paris and possibly secure her, and Saint Lucia’s, first Olympic medal.

From seasoned champions to emerging stars, these athletes embody the spirit and resilience of the Caribbean and will undoubtedly inspire millions as they compete on the world’s biggest stage.

Tips for a Memorable Beach Wedding

FFTP Partners With Cedella Marley for Hurricane Beryl Response

0
Grammy award winner Cedella Marley, daughter of reggae music legend Bob Marley and his wife Rita Marley, stopped by Food For The Poor (FFTP) headquarters in Coconut Creek, Fla., to help pack relief supplies bound for Jamaica last week. Hurricane Beryl’s eyewall brushed by Jamaica’s southern coast on July 3 as a Category 4 storm with winds of 130 mph, blowing off roofs, knocking out power, and unleashing intense wind and rain. Marley is leading relief efforts in partnership with FFTP. Photo/Food For The Poor

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (July 10, 2024) – Food For The Poor (FFTP) is partnering with Grammy Award-winning artist Cedella Marley to raise funds to help survivors of Hurricane Beryl with repairs or replacement of thousands of Zinc roofs damaged and destroyed by the Category 4 storm, which swept across Jamaica and several other Caribbean Islands last week.

Marley is the daughter of legendary Jamaican reggae musicians Bob Marley and Rita Marley.

“I have many family members and friends in Jamaica, and I’ve been in constant contact with them,” said Marley, who lives in South Florida. “They tell me there’s great concern for those left hungry and homeless, especially the children.”

Marley visited FFTP’s Coconut Creek headquarters on Friday and Saturday and worked alongside volunteers to pack hygiene kits with essential everyday items that people need in a crisis.

“People need help and that’s why we’re working with Food For The Poor on delivering much-needed supplies,” Marley said. “This is a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions.”

With so many homes in need of new roofs or major roof repairs, the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation, working in concert with FFTP, is raising funds to provide zinc roofing and hurricane straps. Go to foodforthepoor.org/1love1roof to learn more.

“We are deeply honored to partner with Cedella Marley and the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said.

“The materials for new roofs and these repairs are critical for the families affected,” he added. “They will provide safety, security, and hope to those who have faced unimaginable hardship. As we brace for what is expected to be an active hurricane season, it is more important than ever that these roofs and repairs are completed swiftly.”

FFTP launched a massive response to Beryl even before the storm made landfall, with hundreds of disaster preparedness kits staged in Jamaica and the Windward Islands.

Prior to the storm in Jamaica, disaster preparedness kits for 500 families were ready to be deployed. The day after the storm, the charity delivered 400 packages (and an additional 140 by that weekend) of food, hygiene kits, tarps, water boots and blankets to affected families in the six hardest hit parishes of St. Mary, St. Thomas, St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, and St. Elizabeth.

FFTP also has 53 containers of food, hygiene items, and medical supplies either at the port or en route to all affected areas, including 27 containers in transit to Jamaica.

More than 1,000 people evacuated their homes in Jamaica and are now in shelters. FFTP-Jamaica is supporting these shelters through partnerships, providing food, hygiene items, mattresses, bed linens, and pillows.

Raine said FFTP is uniquely positioned to provide aid through its network of more than 30 distribution centers around Jamaica, plus a network of partners in the Windward Islands.

“Our team, in collaboration with local partners, is ensuring that essential aid reaches those who need it most,” Raine said. “We are committed to standing by these communities as they begin the process of recovery and rebuilding.”

Additional help from trusted FFTP partners includes:

A total of 720 family emergency kits and 720 emergency food kits from Toronto-based GlobalMedic.

Medical supplies and hygiene kits from Lenexa, Kan.-based Heart to Heart International.

Amazon’s Disaster Relief Team, through a partnership with Good360, has donated $20,000 in gift cards to FFTP to order relief items.

We’re diving into some dishes for seafood lovers with a full four course meal of traditional delights ahead of the Bahamas Independence Day

Bahamas Independence with 4 Courses of Traditional Food

Bahamian Johnnycake

Johnnycake is a traditional Bahamian bread, slightly sweet and dense and perfect for accompanying any meal in the Bahamas. If you’re asking us, it also makes for a delicious midnight snack!

What you need:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup shortening or butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
  • ¾ cup milk (add more as needed)

What to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  3. Add the chilled shortening or butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually add the milk, mixing until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not too sticky. Add more milk, a tablespoon at a time, if needed to get to the desired consistency.
  5. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Pat the dough into a round disk, about 1 inch thick.
  6. Place the dough on a greased baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the Johnnycake to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature with butter or jam as your guests are arriving.

Conch Salad

It’s only right that we include conch, the national dish of the Bahamas, in our meal. This conch salad makes for a fresh and zesty appetizer that showcases the island’s love for fresh seafood.

Bahamas Independence with 4 Courses of Traditional Food

What you need:

  • 1 pound fresh conch meat, diced
  • 1 medium red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, diced
  • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced
  • 2 limes, juiced
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • 1-2 teaspoons hot sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

What to do:

  1. Dice the conch meat into small, bite-sized pieces.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the chopped onion, bell peppers, tomato and cucumber.
  3. Add the diced conch to the bowl of vegetables.
  4. Squeeze the juice of the limes and orange over the conch and vegetables. Add hot sauce if using.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Toss everything together until well mixed.
  6. Let the salad marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and to “cook” the conch. The acid from the lime juice essentially cooks the conch meat without heat.
  7. Serve chilled and enjoy!

Rock Lobster

This Bahamian Rock Lobster, also known as spiny lobster, is a delicacy often grilled or steamed and enjoyed with a side of melted butter for the perfect main course.

Bahamas Independence with 4 Courses of Traditional Food

What you need:

  • 4 Bahamian rock lobster tails
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Lemon or lime wedges for serving

What to do:

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Using kitchen shears, cut the top of the lobster shells lengthwise down the middle, exposing the meat. Gently pull the meat out of the shell, leaving the end attached, and rest it on top of the shell.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, minced garlic, lemon juice, paprika, salt and pepper.
  4. Brush the lobster meat generously with the butter mixture.
  5. Place the lobster tails, shell side down, on the grill. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until the meat is opaque and firm, basting occasionally with the remaining butter mixture.
  6. Remove from the grill and serve immediately with lemon or lime wedges.

Benny Cake

Benny Cake is a traditional Bahamian treat made with sesame seeds and honey, offering a sweet, nutty crunch to end the meal.

What you need:

  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

What to do:

  1. In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the sesame seeds until they are golden and fragrant, stirring frequently to prevent burning. This should take about 5 minutes.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, honey and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to bubble.
  3. Stir in the toasted sesame seeds and vanilla extract. Continue to cook for about 2-3 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly.
  4. Pour the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spread it out into an even layer, about ¼ inch thick.
  5. Allow the Benny Cake to cool completely. Once cooled, break or cut into pieces.
  6. Enjoy these sweet and crunchy treats as a snack or dessert.

6 Hidden Gems in the Bahamas Beyond Nassau and Paradise Island

0

When you think of the Bahamas, the bustling streets of Nassau or the luxurious resorts of Paradise Island likely come to mind. However, this archipelago of over 700 islands and cays holds secrets that go far beyond these well-trodden paths. From secluded beaches to cultural enclaves and untouched nature reserves, the Bahamas offers a wealth of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Here’s a journey through some lesser-known islands and attractions for nature lovers, history buffs and adventure seekers alike that showcase the unique charm of these hidden gems in the Bahamas.

Eleuthera

Pink Sand Beaches

Eleuthera is famous for its stunning pink sand beaches, a natural phenomenon caused by microscopic coral insects called foraminifera. The most renowned of these are the mile long French Leave Beach and the appropriately named Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island. The latter stretches for three miles and the rosy-hued sands and crystal-clear waters create a paradise that feels almost otherworldly. Both beaches are perfect for sunbathing, snorkeling or simply enjoying a serene walk. Also on the island is Ocean Hole, often referred to as a bottomless blue hole, which is a natural inland salt water “beach” and swimming spot with tropical fish.

Glass Window Bridge

Another breathtaking sight on Eleuthera is the Glass Window Bridge, often called the “narrowest place on Earth.” Here, a thin strip of land separates the dark blue Atlantic Ocean from the turquoise waters of Eleuthera. The dramatic contrast in colors is breathtaking and provides a unique photo opportunity with panoramic views of the waters.

6 Hidden Gems in the Bahamas Beyond Nassau and Paradise Island

Andros

Andros Barrier Reef

For those looking for a colorful dive, the Andros Barrier Reef, the third-largest barrier reef in the world at around 190 miles long, is a must-visit. This underwater wonderland is teeming with over 160 species of native coral, tropical fish, sea turtles and larger marine life like sharks, making it a diver’s dream destination.

6 Hidden Gems in the Bahamas Beyond Nassau and Paradise Island

Exumas

Swimming with the Pigs at Big Major Cay

Perhaps the most whimsical attraction in the Exumas is the famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay, also known as Pig Beach. These friendly pigs have become a symbol of the Bahamas, and visiting them offers a unique experience. You can feed them, swim alongside them and enjoy their playful antics in the shallow waters.

6 Hidden Gems in the Bahamas Beyond Nassau and Paradise Island

Thunderball Grotto

Adventure seekers will love Thunderball Grotto, a stunning underwater cave system at Staniel Cay that was featured in the James Bond film “Thunderball.” The grotto is accessible only by snorkeling or diving, and its interior is filled with exotic fish and bright corals illuminated by beams of sunlight filtering through the ceiling openings. Though the grotto’s system may appear modest from above, its hidden underwater tunnels and narrow gaps create an extraordinary interior that makes it a perfect spot for adrenaline-seeking adventurers.

Cat Island

Mount Alvernia and The Hermitage

Cat Island is a quiet haven known for its rich history and impressive landscapes. One of its most intriguing sites is Mount Alvernia, the highest point in the Bahamas at 206 feet above sea level. At its summit sits The Hermitage, a small stone monastery built by a former architect-turned-priest, Father Jerome. The walk to the top offers panoramic views of the island, and the Hermitage itself is a testament to solitude and spirituality.

Cat Island Beaches

The beaches on Cat Island are some of the most untouched and serene in the Bahamas. With soft white sands and clear blue waters, places like the 8-mile Greenwood Beach and the secluded New Bight Beach, protected from tourism, offer a perfect retreat for those seeking peace and solitude away from the crowds.

Long Island

Dean’s Blue Hole

Long Island is home to one of the world’s deepest blue holes, Dean’s Blue Hole, plunging to a depth of over 660 feet. This natural marvel is not only a wonder to behold but also a favorite spot for free divers, snorkelers and swimmers. The surrounding beach and rocky cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop to this awe-inspiring location.

Columbus Point

For history enthusiasts, Columbus Point is a significant site where Christopher Columbus is believed to have dropped his anchor on his first voyage to the New World. The area offers stunning views and a monument commemorating this historical event. The hike to the point is rewarding, with sweeping vistas of the island and the Atlantic Ocean.

Bimini

Bimini Road

Bimini, the westernmost district of the Bahamas, is known for its mysterious Bimini Road, an underwater rock formation that some believe to be part of the lost city of Atlantis. Whether you believe in the myth or not, snorkeling or diving around Bimini Road offers an intriguing and mystical experience.

Big Game Fishing in Bimini

Bimini has long been a favorite destination for big game fishing, made famous by Ernest Hemingway who frequented the island. The waters around Bimini are teeming with marlin, tuna and other large fish, making it a paradise for fishing enthusiasts.

Haitian Artist Christopher Mitchell Debuts ‘Les Sirènes’ Exhibit With Life-Sized Mermaids From Vodou Folklore

Originally posted by Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami

Miami-based, Haitian American photographer Christopher Mitchell transforms his photographs into life-sized images of mermaids, incorporating depictions from Haitian folklore and vibrant costumes reminiscent of Kanaval (Haitian Carnival).

Les Sirènes showcases seven different types of mermaids that inhabit the waters of Haiti, from the beaches to the Basin Bleu waterfalls in Jacmel. Each mermaid represents a cautionary tale from Haitian folklore.

Among them is the golden mermaid, who inhabits waterfalls and draws in those greedy enough to risk everything in search of wealth.

The mermaid bride appears on shores, seeking men willing to marry her and bond with her for life.

The conch-carrying mermaid acts as a siren, luring sailors into the sea with her instrument.

There is also the environmental mermaid, who occupies ravines and charms those who litter through their possessions.

Another is the transforming mermaid, capable of turning others into mermaids, with the spell undone only through offerings from a vodou practitioner, forever binding the person to the spiritual world.

The people-killing mermaid, with her sharp teeth and nails, drags her victims deep into the ocean abyss.

Finally, the divine protector of the natural world; this mermaid is known for her beauty. Her domain extends from Haiti’s rivers to the coastal waters, rewarding those who take care of nature, fulfilling her wishes.

Growing up in Haiti, Christopher Mitchell saw North Miami as a second home. With its large Haitian population, bringing Les Sirènes to MOCA connects his community with Haitian mythology and folklore. This installation invites people to interact and exchange stories through life size mermaids, reimagining MOCA’s plaza and drawing in the community into a mythological and enchanted space.

About the artist

Haitian American photographer and director Christopher L.Mitchell, captures the dynamic cultural and spiritual life of Haiti through his lens. Since the mid-1990s, his photography work has documented pivotal events and everyday life in Haiti, including Kanaval, the 2010 earthquake, and ritual of Vodou. Mitchell is currently developing two documentary films – one exploring Kanaval in Jacmel and another focused on Vodou practices and the annual vodou ceremony in Gonaïves. Educated at Pratt Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Mitchell’s engagement with Haitian culture, identity, and history creates a compelling visual narrative that brings the stories of Haiti into a global spotlight.

Riding the wave of acclaim from his recent production of the highly successful biopic Bob Marley: One Love, Ziggy Marley is set to embark on his Circle of Peace tour this summer. The film, celebrating the legendary life and music of his father, has quickly become a household favorite among the diaspora, adding to Ziggy’s legacy in the world of reggae.

The Circle of Peace Tour will kick off on July 5, 2024, at The Rady Shell in San Diego, California, and will journey through the West Coast and Midwest. Fans can look forward to a summer filled with reggae as Ziggy continues to honor his father’s legacy while carving out his unique path in the music world. Boston funk band, Lettuce, will join Ziggy for the majority of the tour dates, adding their distinctive groove to the mix.

To herald the tour’s launch, Ziggy released a previously unheard live version of the track “Circle of Peace” on March 22. This release not only sets the tone for the tour but also pays homage to his father’s enduring message of unity and peace. The “Circle of Peace” tour is particularly poignant given the historical significance of Bob Marley’s own One Love Peace Concert held in 1978. This iconic event, staged during a period of intense political conflict in Jamaica, remains a symbol of reconciliation and hope, embodying Marley’s powerful impact on the world.

As Ziggy takes the stage, he steps into the footsteps of his father, whose music and activism have left an indelible mark on the world. The One Love Peace Concert brought together opposing political factions, showcasing Bob Marley’s unique ability to unite people through his music, and now Ziggy continues this tradition, using his platform to promote messages of love, peace and unity.
