It’s been nearly a year in development for the crime drama Hustlers. Casting announcements came hot and heavy in the lead-up to a very public announcement officially declaring the start of principal photography. And, it’s only been three months since a release date was announced. But, a trailer has finally dropped for the ensemble film, and at first watch Hustlers ratchets up to the top of the most-anticipated list!
The trailer makes a point of emphasizing the all-star cast, including Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, rapper Lizzo, Cardi B, Keke Palmer, and Lili Reinhart. Lopez dominates, starting with her showing off with some saucy pole dancing. Based on Jessica Pressler’s New Yorker article, “The Hustlers at Scores,” the trailer introduces Wu’s and Lopez’s characters. Wu plays a former a neophyte stripper (Destiny) who “just wants to take care of my grandma,” learning the ropes from Lopez’s more hardened character (Ramona).
The women are not just ogled at by the men in the strip club, but also forced to give a share of their money back to their male boss. A scheme is soon announced where the women will take the Wall Street guys who “should be in jail” for all their worth. Cut to a series of smash cuts wherein the women are spending money like mad, only for it all to come crashing down.
It’s not entirely surprising to see the story of a group of marginalized women hoping to take down white Wall Street execs for all they’re worth. This year has been flush with movies about women seeking revenge, but not from this class perspective. Lopez could easily be cementing herself for an awards turn if the trailer is any indication and STX markets her right. She is the most eye-catching member of a cast that’s incredibly impressive. Get ready to hustle down to the theater this fall!
